Titanium Dioxide
Titanium Dioxide is a natural source pigment, quarry mined and further
refined to a fluffy white powder. It is commonly found in cosmetics
as a whitening agent and it is also found within sunscreens because
of its impressive capability to block UV light. Titanium Dioxide has
an enormous refractive index (ability to bend light) and comes in
right under diamonds. This is why it is the first choice for
powerful sunscreens. We would like to break the use of Titanium
Dioxide into 2 parts.
1. Cosmetic Use Titanium Dioxide is one of the most
powerful whitening pigments found today. It adds a bright white
color to lotions, creams, and sunscreens. When using Titanium be
sure not to add NO MORE then 25% to the total mixture/recipe. Adding
to much Titanium will cause a spotty appearance to your cosmetics
and may actually cause more harm then good. It should also be noted
that if your cosmetics contain too much Titanium it will leave a
very white, opaque appearance on the skin when applied, this is
especially problematic for sunscreens. For best results we
recommend 1-2 tablespoons for a 1-gallon batch and 1-2 tablespoons
for a 2-5 gallon batch.
2. Sunscreen Use Unfortunately we are not able to help
our customers formulate an exact percentage of Titanium to be used
within their sunscreen recipes to create a particular SPF.
Creating SPF values is an exact and precise science and we
recommend its use through your own trial and error or through the
administration of laboratory assistance.

Botanical Name- None Origin- USA Extraction- Quarry
Mined/Refined Shelf life- 3-5 years Notes- Stores well under
any condition but will lose quality under humid conditions. Always
store in a dry location. When handling raw Titanium Dioxide always
wear a ventilation mask and work in an open aired environment.
Prolonged exposure of the raw material with the skin might cause
irritation. Do not expose directly to the mucous membranes.

Two forms of titanium dioxide were selected for Total Block.
First is an opaque, cosmetic form that reflects and scatters most
wavelengths of UVB, plus some UVA. Second is sub-micronized
"transparent" titanium dioxide. This form of titanium dioxide allows
for a much higher percentage while retaining cosmetic elegance, and
achieving an increase in UVB protection. Together, these two
titanium dioxides (differing only in particle size) obtain excellent
UVB protection (High SPF) plus moderate UVA protection.
