Basil (Sweet Basil)
Botanical Name: Ocium basilicum Common
Method Of Extraction: Steam distillation. Parts Used:
The leaves and flowering tops. Note Classification: Top
Aroma: Fresh, spicy-sweet and green aroma. Mildly
licorice-like, with a warm undertone. Largest Producing
Countries: Countries surrounding the Mediterranean Sea, India.
Reunion, Comoro Islands Traditional Use: In the Far East,
used in Ayurvedic medicine as tulsi. Native to India and treated as
a sacred herb where it was believed to protect against evil. In
Greece it became a symbol of hostility and insanity! It reached
Europe in the 16th century and was used in cooking and medicine. The
oil was even used to scent snuff. In the 17th century, Jacques
Tournefourt thought smelling basil would cause scorpions to breed in
the brain - giving it a bit of a negative image. Has been used as an
antidote to insect and snakebites. Potential uses and
benefits: In a diffuser to produce a refreshing, uplifting and
energizing atmosphere, Basil is widely regarded as brain, memory and
adrenal stimulant. It also appears to soothe stress, depression and
overall fatigue. Use it in a diffuser as a decongestant and
anti-bacterial, helpful in reducing headaches and sinus congestion.
In a massage oil it can assist reducing mild pain, stiffness and
inflammation. In the bath 3 to 4 drops make for a refreshing yet
soothing experience; combine with one or two other oils to create a
wonderful aromatic treat. In a jojoba oil base it makes a great
hair conditioner and may stimulate hair growth. Blends Well
With: Rosemary as a hair application in a jojoba oil base. Sweet
Orange in a massage oil or, in a diffuser. Roses and Rose Geranium
as pleasing perfume or body oil. Also Lavender, Peppermint,
Spearmint and the Citrus family of essential oils. Notes:
Around 150 varieties of basil in the world. Used extensively in food
products. Safety Data: Avoid in cases of liver problems. Not
for use when pregnant or nursing. Possible skin irritant - dilute
well. Can be over-stimulating. Can promote and increase menstrual
flow.
As with all essential oils, do not use undiluted. Do not
take internally unless working with a qualified and expert
practitioner. Keep away from children. Not for those with epilepsy
or subject to seizures. Always conduct a skin patch test before
