Reishi
mushrooms grow on rotting logs and fallen tree stumps throughout the
coastal regions of China. Reishi may be one of several different
colors with red being the most commonly cultivated for use in North
America and Asia. The fruiting part of the reishi mushroom is used
medicinally in connection with a variety of
conditions.
Reishi, also known as hing zhi “herb of spiritual
potency”, is a mushroom that is found most commonly along the coast
of China growing voluntarily on decaying logs and tree stumps. It is
cultivated in North America, China, Taiwan, Japan, and Korea.
Although reishi comes in 6 different colors, red is the most common
variety used.
Reishi is medically known for its ability to
relieve fatigue and weakness, asthma, insomnia, and coughs. It
contains several major constituents including sterols, coumarin,
mannitol, polysaccharides, and triterpenoids called ganoderic
acids.
Ganoderic acids may lower blood pressure as well as
decrease cholesterol as well as reduce blood platelets from sticking
together as in coronary artery disease. It may reduce symptoms from
altitude sickness and chronic hepatitis B, but more studies need to
be done to confirm this in well-designed human trials. It may also
be helpful for diabetes mellitus and cancer. Reishi could lower
blood pressure as well.
