Reishi, also known as hing zhi “herb of spiritual potency”, is a mushroom that is found most commonly along the coast of China growing voluntarily on decaying logs and tree stumps. It is cultivated in North America, China, Taiwan, Japan, and Korea. Although reishi comes in 6 different colors, red is the most common variety used.

Reishi is medically known for its ability to relieve fatigue and weakness, asthma, insomnia, and coughs. It contains several major constituents including sterols, coumarin, mannitol, polysaccharides, and triterpenoids called ganoderic acids.

Ganoderic acids may lower blood pressure as well as decrease cholesterol as well as reduce blood platelets from sticking together as in coronary artery disease. It may reduce symptoms from altitude sickness and chronic hepatitis B, but more studies need to be done to confirm this in well-designed human trials.
