One of the major roles of lipase enzyme is to help the body to
break down dietary fats into an absorbable form. When lipase levels
decrease below the level necessary to break down dietary fats, a
condition called steatorrhea can occur.
The majority of the
lipase enzyme is produced in the pancreas, although small amounts
are secreted in the saliva as well. Pancreatin produced by the
pancreas contains lipase as well as two other groups of enzymes:
proteases and amylase.
Individuals suffering from pancreatic
insufficiency and cystic fibrosis often take supplemental lipase
along with other enzymes to help treat there condition and alleviate
symptoms. Also, lipase may also be helpful for sufferers of celiac
disease or Crohn’s disease. People suffering from indigestion may
also benefit from lipase supplements.
Dosage and
Administration
Many lipase supplements also usually
contain other digestive enzymes. In the U.S., pancreatin is a common
supplement containing lipase, amylase, and proteases. 9X pancreatin
is nine times stronger than the government standard. Each “X”
contains 25 USP units of amylase, 2 USP units of lipase, and 25 USP
units of proteolytic enzymes. Taking 1.5 grams of 9X pancreatin (or
a higher amount at lower potencies) with each meal can help people
with pancreatic insufficiency digest food.
