Chromium is an essential trace mineral for the human body. It’s
important in processing carbohydrates and fats, and it helps cells
respond properly to insulin. It this this effect that leads many
reseacher and healthcare practitioners to believe that chromium can
help treat diabetes.
In addition to its well-studied effects
in diabetes, results of recent research indicates that chromium
supplementation may also improve glucose tolerance in people with
Turner’s syndrome - a disease linked with glucose intolerance. Many
scientists also believe tha chromium can also increase HDL
cholesterol (the good cholesterol) in the body, while lowering total
cholesterol levels.
The picolinate form is chromium (Chromium
Picolinate) is very popular as it is believe to be the easiest for
the body to absorb. It has also been suggested that chromium
picolinate can increase fat loss, promote weight loss and create
gains in lean muscle tissue.
Dosage and
Administration
National Academy of Science’s
recommended range of 50-200 mcg per day. The high incidence of
adult-onset diabetes suggests to some doctors that many people
should be supplementing with small amounts of chromium. A daily
intake of 200 mcg is recommended by many doctors. In general, a
pregnant woman needs an additional 5 mcg of chromium per day (over
the RDA) and a breast-feeding woman needs about 10 mcg more per day
than other women in her age group.
