Zinc is a mineral that occurs in
animal tissue, and in plants when they grow on good soil. It is
important for various enzyme reactions, for the reproduction
system, and for the manufacture of body protein.
Zinc is an antioxidant nutrient. Zinc is
necessary for protein synthesis and wound healing; is vital for
the development of the reproductive organs, prostate functions
and male hormone activity; it governs the contractility of
muscles; is important for blood stability; maintains the body's
alkaline balance; helps in normal tissue function; and aids in
the digestion and metabolism of phosphorus.
A deficiency of zinc may result in delayed
sexual maturity, prolonged healing wounds, white spots on finger
nails, retarded growth, stretch marks, fatigue, decreased
alertness, and/or susceptibility to infections.
The plant foods highest in zinc content are:
bran, nuts, green leafy vegetables.
