Squaw Vine acquired its
name because it was popular among many American Indian tribes as
an aid to parturition, being used in large quantities during the
last few weeks of pregnancy. The plant was also used extensively
to treat several uterine difficulties, including painful
menstruation and threat of miscarriage. Though early American
physicians used this herb quite successfully, it wasn't until
1926 that it gained official recognition and was allowed into the
National Formulary.
