Omega-3
Fatty Acids, like EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic
acid), are the constituents of fish oils that may protect against heart
attacks by thinning the blood. They also act as anti-inflammatory agents, and
may be worth trying if you have an auto-immune disorder or arthritis. Many
versions of these substances are on the shelves of health-food stores, from
salmon oil to capsules of concentrated EPA.
A natural alternative to the use of the omega-3 fatty acids is to consume flax seeds, flax oil, and hemp oil (rather than fish oil) as a dietary supplement. Because of their effect on blood clotting, you should avoid fish oil supplements if you are taking any type of anti-coagulant drug.
